Season 2015/16
Opera

The Emperor of Atlantis

by Viktor Ullmann

Written in 1942 at Terezín, the score was orchestrated by the composer based on the disposability of the singers and musicians present at the concentration camp. There were seven voices, thirteen instruments, including some unconventional ones such as the banjo and the harmonium. The opera was never performed: with rehearsals already underway, the censors intervened and considered the principal role of The Overall Emperor to be a satire of Hitler. Almost all of the protagonists were deported to Auschwitz and died in the gas chambers. The score was saved by the survivors of Terezin.
