The evening opens with Ma Mere l'Oye by Maurice Ravel and with the première of Manuale d’esorcismo by Michele dall’Ongaro, a composition commissioned by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, to continue with Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony n° 3, a passage from the opera The Fiery Angel, which was never performed during the composer's life. The plot tells of a woman, Renata, seized by mystical raptures and hysterical erotic crises, enamoured by a fiery angel, whose story includes appearances by Faust and Mephistopheles before being condemned to burn at the stake. Prokofiev’s music transmits a sense of the diabolic perceptions with rhythm and colour, alternating moments of calm with strident accords.
