Season 2014/2015
Concert

Zubin Mehta / Pinchas Zukerman

Edward Elgar began sketching a violin concerto in 1890, but not happy with the result, he destroyed the manuscript. Seventeen years later, at the invitation of violinist Fritz Kreisler who considered him "the greatest living composer", he composed the Concerto in B minor, Op. 61. The first performance, at the Royal Philharmonic Society of London in 1910 with Elgar on the podium, received a triumphant success. Even more complex was the creation of the Symphony n. 4 of Anton Bruckner, written in 1874 and constantly reworked until 1888.  It is the only one of Austrian composer's 11 symphonies with a descriptive title: the Romantic, perhaps in reference to the fantastic medieval world also present in the works of his beloved Richard Wagner.
