Born in Rohrau, Austria, on March 31, 1732, at six years he began studying harpsichord and violin. He moved to Vienna entering the service of composer Nicola Porpora as valet and accompanist harpsichord in exchange for free lessons. After a time with Count Karl Morzin, in which he gave birth to his first symphonies, since 1766 he is hired as choirmaster by the important Esterházy family, a role that holds for almost thirty years. Between 1791 and 1795 he stays in London where he directs a series of concerts with great success. Here also has the opportunity to meet the oratories of Georg Friedrich Händel, a fundamental inspiration for his Die Schöpfung (1798) and Die Jahreszeiten (1801). Back in Vienna, he died there in 1809 during the occupation of the city by Napoleon's troops.
