The Symphonie fantastique: Épisode de la vie d'un artiste is a kind of symphonic poem composed by Hector Berlioz on the basis of an idéè fixe: the woman he loved. The melancholy and the heated moments of passion expressed through music contributed to the rumour that Berlioz had written this piece while under the effect of opium. The theme of love is also present in Brahms’s splendid Rhapsody, composed for a wedding, based on Goethe’s verse, which expresses troubled and contrasting moods.
