A kaleidoscope of disguises, nighttime serenades, hilarious misunderstandings and famous arias. Il Barbiere di Siviglia was composed in a dozen days by Gioachino Rossini, and staged for the first time at the Teatro Argentina in Rome February 20, 1816. The outcome of the evening, one of the most sensational fiascos in the history of music, perhaps organized by admirers of Giovanni Paisiello who were disappointed to see the young musician with a subject already addressed by the elder Master, amplifies the unstoppable popularity of this masterpiece. The comic opera par excellence, here on stage in the production by Damiano Michieletto, the brilliant enfant terrible of theater direction.

GIOACHINO ROSSINI

Born in Pesaro February 29, 1792, the son of a trumpet player and a singer he began to study harpsichord and singing in Lugo, and then enrolled in 1806 to study the cello, piano and composition at the Liceo Musicale of Bologna. He made his debut in 1810 with La cambiale di matrimonio at the Teatro San Moise in Venice, but his first important successes come with La pietra del paragone (1812), Tancredi and L'italiana in Algieri (1813). Hired by the impresario Domenico Barbaja as director of the theaters San Carlo and Fondo in Naples and with the obligation to write two operas a year, composed Otello(1816), Mose in Egitto (1818), Ermione (1819), Maometto II(1820). In Rome, between 1816 and 1817 were staged Il Barbiere di Siviglia and La Cenerentola.  Again in 1817, La Gazza Ladra was produced at La Scala in Milan.  WithGuillaume Tell (1829) he abandons lyric theater and dedicates himself to the Stabat Mater (1841) and thePetite Messe Solemnelle (1863).  He died at Passy, near Paris on November 13, 1868.

Born in 1974, at the age of five he began his musical studies.  He graduated in piano, conducting, and electronic music and he continued his studies with the composer Giorgio Nottoli at the Accademia Chigiana of Siena and with the pianist, Kostatin Bogino. He was a student of both Piero Bellugi and Massimo de Bernart, of whom he was his last assistant. In 2002 he made his conducting debut with Guglielmo Tell in the Teatri del Circuito Lombardo.  The next year he conducted the first modern performance of the musical comedy by Leonardo Leo Lo matrimonio annascuso, of which he oversaw the revision, at the Sassuolo Musica Festival. He has conducted many opera titles including Rigoletto, Orfeo ed Euridice, Il Trovatore, Falstaff, L’Arlesiana. and in 2010 he conducted Il barbiere di Siviglia for Maggio Estate.

Born in Venice in 1975, there he graduated in Modern Letters at the University Ca’ Foscari. He studied directing at the Scuola d’Arte Drammatica Paolo Grassi di Milano and in 2003 received the Irish Times ESB Theatre Award for his production of Švanda dudák at the Wexford Festival Opera. He won the Franco Abbiato Prize for La gazza ladra produced with the Rossini Opera Festival, the Arena di Verona and the Finnish National Opera. He has also staged productions of Lucia di Lammermoor, Il Corsaro, Luisa Miller and Poliuto for the Opernhaus Zürich, Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte for the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Madama Butterfly for the Teatro Regio di Torino, Un ballo in maschera for the Teatro alla Scala di Milano, La bohème, Falstaff and La Cenerentola for the Salzburg Festival.
