"Someone called it a lullaby of death. But that's how I feel death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness of the hereafter rather than a painful passage". In those words of Gabriel Fauré there's the whole meaning of his Requiem. Composed after the death of his parents and performed for the first time in 1888 in the Parisian Église de la Madeleine, in which he was choirmaster and where in 1924 was repeated for the funeral of the author, appears pervaded by an intimate and lyrical serenity from which is banned all ostentation. After this delicate masterpiece the program continues with the great Symphony no. 9 of Franz Schubert, initially lost until rediscovered by Robert Schumann, which premiered on March 21, 1839 directed by Felix Mendelssohn with resounding success.
