Performed for the first time at the Teatro San Moisé in Venice in 1778, this comic opera became an immediate success and quickly spread throughout Europe. Caterino Mazzolà’s libretto was amended in 1783 by Lorenzo Da Ponte for a second version which was performed at the Burgtheatre in Vienna. As well as the traditional and entertaining amorous skirmishes between the characters which was typical of playful melodrama, the story is interesting as it involves figures of various social extract - aristocrats, the upper-classes and servants, a forbearer of situations which are to be found in the Mozart-Da Ponte trilogy.
