The anthems which heralded Italy’s entrance into the Great war and the songs that accompanied the long days in the trenches, presented in their original simplicity by a voice and a piano, are interwoven with poetry by literates such as Corrado Govoni, Pietro Jahier, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Ardegno Soffici, Corrado Alvaro, Renato Perseni and Carlo Delcroix, some of which were personally involved on the front, and the diaries and letters of infantrymen who died fighting for freedom. It is the literary and musical reading of the first world war, a massacre which led to between 15 and 17 million deaths.
