Season 2015/16
Concert Beethoven's Symphonies

Alpesh Chauhan / Johannes Moser

"An orchestra plays a melody. Rather, it describes a melody, but only as a shadow can describe an object and an echo can describe a sound. The melody is held constant but discontinuous, through return and digressions, around a mobile center, away, perhaps incomprehensible to the listener": that's how Luciano Berio describes Requies, dedicated to the memory of his first wife Cathy Berberian. Tout un monde lointain is inspired by five poems of Charles Baudelaire and composed by Henri Dutilleux between 1967 and 1970 for the sublime cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Concludes the program the Symphony no. 2, which behind the calm serenity hides one of the most painful times of Ludwig van Beethoven, when deafness forced him to abandon his concert career.
