LXXXI Festival of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino
Opera

Cardillac

Paul Hindemith

Cardillac by Paul Hindemith, based on a short story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, was staged on 9 November 1926 in Dresden. A later version in four acts was created by Hindemith for Zurich. The Maggio will be staging the first version. The story takes place in 17th-Century Paris. The protagonist, the goldsmith Cardillac, is obsessively possessive of his creations-masterpieces, so much so as to be led to kill the buyers in order to have them back. This is a musical and philosophical reflection on the role of the artist and his need to go beyond established rules and laws. The opera returns to the Maggio twenty-six years on from the previous staging directed by Bruno Bartoletti, and marks the debut of Fabio Luisi at the Festival, and Valerio Binasco as the director of the opera.
